Elite middle-distance prospect Thomas Cowan of Auckland, New Zealand announced his commitment to Boston University.

The 18-year-old has personal bests of 48.82 in the 400m and 1:49.14 in the 800m. He ran his 800m PB last December at the Daikin Night of 5s, which was well below the World U20 Championships standard, which should earn him a spot on the New Zealand squad for the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru in August.

"I chose BU because of its balanced approach between the academics and athletic aspects. They are building a strong middle-distance program which in the years to come will be exciting to watch grow. I also found that Coach Carpenter and Coach Sanders were easy to get along with and wanted to work with me toward achieving my aspirations. I can’t wait to get to work and see what the future holds for being a Terrier!"

Cowan will join the Terriers in August 2023. He will be accompanied by James American Horse, Daniel Hruska, Isaac Mahler, Brandon Piedade, and Jacob Sushinsky.
